CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

FLYNN

My eyes are trying to fuck with me.

Either that or Ruby is standing on the road beside my car, her hair slicked with rain, her ivory gown soaked through, and her cheeks wet.

My heart is leaping out of my chest, and I must be gaping at her because she says my name again.

“Get in,” I say quickly, like a ghoul might suddenly appear from the shadows and snatch her away. A ghoul that looks a lot like Blake Harrington.

Without hesitating, she climbs in beside me, bringing a whiff of vanilla perfume and heaven. The length of her dress sweeps mud everywhere, but I couldn’t care less. Somehow, Ruby’s tucked inside a car with me, and I’m turning the wheel toward the exit road.

“Thank you,” she says, her voice tight and tear-stained, and a sick feeling washes through me as my brain catches up to what’s really happening here.

What’s happening is that Ruby and Blake’s wedding turned into a shit show, and your little spontaneous sonnet was the closing number. Focus on that, Flynn.

When I spot that her left ring finger is bare, my gut turns hollow.

“I’m so sorry, Quinn,” I manage to get out.

While I’m sure it’ll hit me later, I’m not even that embarrassed at how I poured my heart out to her through a microphone. What I can’t stand is seeing her so broken.

She rests her shoulder against the window, staring at the blur of wind-whipped trees through the rain-coated glass. “It’s okay,” she says eventually. “I didn’t run away because of you. It’s…Blake.”

She says his name like it’s toxic.

“I know.” A flashback of him grunting into Tammy makes me tighten my grip on the steering wheel.

Then my mind locks on to what else she just said. “I didn’t run away because of you.” Is she talking about my speech? I know I made it pretty obvious to her who those words were about, but I sure hope the rest of the reception didn’t catch on. The last thing Ruby needs is everyone thinking I’m the reason for her sudden wedding escape.

She presses her hand to her head, squeezing her eyes shut as if she’s fighting tears. “You don’t have anything to eat in here, do you?”

I don’t even have to think. I lean across the center console, my arm brushing her knee as I unlatch the glove box. From inside, I pull out the chocolate bar I bought as a lame peace offering after she told me off at the picnic, but never gave to her. The thing has melted and reformed more times than I can count, but it feels semi-solid inside the wrapper when I hand it to her.

“Thanks.” She laughs, but there’s no humor to the sound. “This one’s my favorite.”

“Yeah. I know.” She used to pull one out of her backpack every day between our third and fourth period classes.

I can feel her eyes on me, but by the time I navigate around the next bend, she’s back to staring out the window.
